Choosing right skin-care is very essential. While some people may want to maintain the beautiful radiant skin they inherit, others may want to resolve their skin issues to make it better. Either ways, a holistic approach is very important. Radiant smooth skin doesn’t happen overnight. Our lifestyle, our mindset and dietary habits, along with the use of right products, help attain and maintain a healthy glow, inside out.

While the process is very simple, it can take a while till you start making this a way of life. Below are few pointers you can start taking towards caring for your skin:

  1. Analyze your skin type:

    Understand whether your skin is normal / oily / dry / or combination type. Keep in mind your age. Young skin may need moderate care, whereas if you’re above 30yrs of age, you must start using specific kind of products, ones that nourish thoroughly to repair your skin thus delaying the process of ageing.

  1. Learn to understand what your skin is telling you:

    Some products may blend in smoothly, while your skin may react to some. Pimples, pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, dryness, excessive oiliness, clogged pores or just maintenance for normal skin – know your concern.

  1. Address and act accordingly:

    Seek help from a professional skin-care expert / dermatologist / aesthetician if you need to do so. If you know your skin concern and have learnt to deal with it, persevere.

  1. Use products best suited for your skin type:

    Read what’s on the label of product, always. Make it a habit. If you have a sensitive skin, you could consider hypo-allergenic products. If you have oily skin, choose lotions that are water-based and light, use make-up which is powder-based over oily creams so your pores don’t clog. If you have dry skin, use rich moisturizing creams or butters especially at night before going to sleep, so that they absorb well and skin is thoroughly replenished. If you have mature skin or have started to get fine lines/wrinkles, start using products rich in anti-oxidants (to delay the ageing process), retinoids (to accelerate skin repair), oils like grapeseed oil, walnut oil, rosehip oil, almond oil & alike (to improve elasticity of skin) & so on.

One should never underestimate the importance of cleansing, toning and moisturizing. Regular exfoliation and thorough moisturizing are very vital to your skin health.

You should know that whatever you apply on your skin, 60-70% of it is absorbed and enters your system. Hence choosing the right kind of product becomes pivotal. It’s always better to opt for natural/organic products over synthetic chemical-laden products. They’re not only a safe choice for your skin but also for the environment. You may not get results overnight but you know that in the long term, your radiance is here to stay.

  1. Improve your diet:

    The food you eat can either make you healthy or make you sick. You make the choice. Diet very rich in sugars and fats, junk food or white breads can slow your metabolism and hamper your digestion. Try to include at least 2-4 portions of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. Eat whole raw fruits over sweetened canned fruit juices. A good digestive system, food rich in the right nutrients and a balanced diet, give your skin a natural glow.

  1. Hydrate yourself enough:

    Drink enough water so that your cells restore and your skin looks moisturized and hydrated. Drinking about 10-12 glasses of water each day can work wonders for your skin.

  1. Exercise:

    Work out or indulge yourself in a sport of your choice, choose any but make sure to get your body moving. Working out releases the good hormones called endorphins. These are confidence boosters, making you feel good about your body and yourself.

  1. Lastly, get your beauty sleep! There’s a reason it is called so, because when you sleep, your muscles relax, your skin repairs and everything positively influences your cognitive ability, reasoning and mood, so you wake up feeling refreshed, recharged and rejuvenated.

Experiment moderately but sensibly. Make sure to be disciplined about your health and well-being. Because, I quote, “Your skin is always a reflection of your health inside”.
